Home From Away

Ray and I are back from a week in Killarney Provincial Park.   Just the two of us.   The boys spent the week in Washington DC on a Serve Project.   It was uneventful(no bears!) yet unforgettable,  hard work yet relaxing, and refreshing on so many levels.  We went to Killarney a couple of years ago for my first wilderness trip, this was my fourth. It doesn't compare to our trip to Wabakimi.   It was so different and in many ways, even better.

It was good to seek and find  quiet waters, wander through forest glades, climb rugged trails to the top of Silver Peak and the Crack, swim in deep, cool, crystal clear water, watch the sun go down, embers die out, and stars appear.

It was an amazing trip.  Good to be away and just see nothing but Ray and trees.  Everywhere you look trees.   And sky.   And water, crystal clear water.   And magnificent rock out croppings.   A great ledge from which to swim, right in front of our campsite....same spot we sat to catch the wind and watch the sun go down...enough wind to keep the mosquitoes away...and lay out on the still warm granite to watch the stars, even a shooting star.

Heat wave....what heatwave?  It felt like a lovely 25 degrees or so with the constant breeze that never seemed to disappear.   Except the day we hiked Silver Peak...the humidity that day almost did us in, but we made it up and we made it down. And the brisk wind on top of Silver Peak could blow your hat right off.   Everyone arrived at the peak sweat soaked as if having walked through a monsoon but clothes soon dried, baked on the rocks.   We filled up our tummies full of blueberries.  Rested, rehydrated and drank in the grandeur.    Ray and I brought 3 litres of water up with us and had to ration our last 500 ml carefully, drinking our last swigs back at the canoes where we were ready to filter and fill right back up.

The strangest feeling of the whole trip was catching a glimpse of myself in a mirror in a Tim Horton's in Parry Sound after not having seen myself for a week.  Hmmm...sometimes life gets so busy that I don't catch a glimpse of myself either.

Best first moment back in the "real" world??  An ice cold Pepsi and fish and chips Hebert's Fisheries Fish and Chips.

Thought I'd share a couple of my favourite photos :)

So many hymns come to mind looking at your pics - "This is my Father's World" is first on the list, followed by "Great is Thy Faithfulness" (summer and winter, and springtime and havest...).
Thanks for taking me on a mini holiday!

Ahhhh ... gorgeous photos. Wish you'd taken me with you! It's been so long since I've had any sore of vacation without kids. Sounds like just the sort of thing to recharge the batteries :)
Nice to have you back!

I was humming "When through the woods and forest glades I wander, and hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees....and think my God how great Thou art..."
